Hello
everyone. I'm going to start adding tips to the webpage
to help everyone learn what we learned in Warrensburg
and become better officials.
Tip #1:
When signaling with an open palm,
make sure you tuck your thumb in. Get rid of the
hitch-hike thumb. Place your thumb in your palm or just
bend it in. So, take a quick glance at your hand when
you are signaling. If your thumb is pointing outward,
tuck it in.
Tip #2
Do not be a "pole hugger." Cathy Veets from MSHSAA
preached to us that there should be no bending or
holding while up on the stand. You should be standing
straight up at all times and only your head should be
moving to follow the ball.
Tip #3:
When beckoning the serve or or
signaling a side out, your palm should be
perpendicular to the floor. This means that
your pinkie finger should be the closest part of
your hand to the floor. This makes it easier
for the fans, coaches, and players to see what your
call is (also, it's in the rule book).

Tip #4
When
signaling a dead ball, you should never point your hand
to where the ball went down or where it went out of
bounds. The correct hand placement is 45 degrees from
your body. Pick a general position on the floor, and
point to it every time. Along with that, there should
be a distinct difference between side out and dead
ball. Dead ball should be at a 45 degree angle pointing
at the floor, whereas a serve/side out should be a 90
degree angle with the floor, directly our of your
shoulder.
