Here are the highlights of Mark Probst’s comments from last night’s meeting :
· Black pants can be used at all levels of Football games this coming season. [ If one wears, all must wear ]
· Volleyball approved use of a “ red flag “ at every match starting next year. [ Schools hopefully will provide these, but officials should bring one to games just in case ].
· It has been recommended that two officials work every volleyball match, even at the Frosh level, where now, only one official works the match. Board must approve this change, with a vote to be taken in 13 days. [ Probst indicated this would put a strain on officials availability if approved ].
· Ejections are up some 33% in all sports. [ Fan ejections are way up too ! ]. MSHSAA says schools must do a Better job in this area.
· Proposed transfer policy being studied could impact sports in MSHSAA. Idea still in committee. If it gets out of committee, MSHSAA office may solicit help of officials and their State Reps to thwart this effort there is a bill in the State House that would basically eliminate the MSHSAA. [ Still somewhat vague, but could get legs if some influential business person in the Northwest part of the state gets his way ].
· “ Conflict of interest “ – steps are being taken to better define what constitutes this when working an athletic contest. I.E., if you are scheduled to work a game at a school you played for within the last, say 10 years, you should get off the game. Likewise, if you have a child who plays sports at that school, you should excuse yourself from that game. [ More to come on this subject ].
· Fees for the next two years for Football, Basketball and Volleyball, as well as other sports, were set ! [ For the first time in recent history, school Superintendents got involved. 3/4s of them voted for zero [ 0 ] increases for officials fees. After smoke settled, we ended up getting approx.. a 2% raise ]. Mark stated that the school ADs felt that the officials should have gotten more, but to no avail !
· Arbiter System will be used to schedule games per Probst.
· Related to above, a new way of paying officials will soon go into effect. In essence, instead of receiving a check at the contest the night you work, game fee[s] will be automatically deposited into an account you would have set up to accommodate same. [ Also considered is a debit card issued to the official to collect his or her game fees ]. May possibly use a system known as Ref-Pay to accomplish this. More to come on this !
· 2 officials “ pitched” their 1099 forms for the 2011 calendar year. Mark said it was costly to obtain a duplicate Copy and warned officials not to do so in the future, or they would have to pay.
